Frequently Asked Questions

It estimates emissions from four sources: computation in GPU and CPU hours, conference and field travel, laboratory energy use including ultra-low temperature freezers, and single-use consumables.

It is an order-of-magnitude estimate intended for prioritising reductions, not a certified emissions inventory. The largest source of uncertainty is grid carbon intensity, which varies substantially by location and by time of day.

For computational groups, right-sizing models and scheduling long jobs into low-carbon grid periods. For laboratory groups, raising ultra-low freezer setpoints from minus 80 to minus 70 degrees Celsius and sharing equipment between groups.
